To move your domain to another registrar you need its EPP/Auth code and an initiated transfer at the receiving registrar. Once your account is current, your identity as the registrant is verified, and the destination registrar details are confirmed, we release the EPP code and initiate the transfer within 5 business days. The transfer itself follows ICANN and registry rules and can take up to 60 days end to end.
Before we can release the EPP code
- Your account must be current, with nothing outstanding.
- The registrant identity must be verified.
- The destination registrar details must be confirmed.
- A domain reserved as a courtesy must be paid in full first. Until then you have no ownership of the domain and no right to its EPP/Auth code. See Reserving a Domain Before You Pay.
The timeline
Once those conditions are met, we release the EPP/Auth code and initiate the transfer within 5 business days. From there, the clock belongs to ICANN and the registries, and a transfer can take up to 60 days because of:
- the 60 day lock on new registrations, covered in The 60 Day Transfer Lock Explained;
- locks left by a prior transfer;
- registrant changes;
- registrar or registry holds;
- anti-fraud checks.
After the transfer
Once the domain lands at the new registrar, review its DNS. If nameservers or records change during the move, allow up to 48 hours for propagation before judging the result. DNS changes and propagation explains why the rollout is gradual.
