Washington DC, DC - Greater Washington

Local SEO in Washington DC for the District, Maryland and Virginia

Greater Washington spans the District, Maryland, Virginia and one West Virginia county: 23 counties and county equivalents in the Census Bureau's Vintage 2025 estimates. Local SEO in Washington DC starts with the jurisdictions you serve, then citations, Google Business Profile work and backlinks built around them, plus extra service area pages for the communities you want to grow in.

Washington, DC is one city of 693,645 residents in the Census Bureau's Vintage 2025 estimates, and the metro area around it takes in parts of Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia. This page sets out the Census figures, place names and corridors a Greater Washington campaign is planned around, what our Local SEO service includes, and where our proof comes from.

Population and business counts

The Census Bureau's Vintage 2025 estimates put the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, DC-VA-MD-WV metro area at 6,465,724 residents on July 1, 2025, the seventh largest metro area in the country. In the same Vintage 2025 estimates, its 23 counties and county equivalents split into 693,645 residents in the District, 2,524,432 in four Maryland counties, 3,184,545 in 17 Virginia counties and independent cities, and 63,102 in Jefferson County, West Virginia.

Fairfax County is the largest single jurisdiction, with 1,167,873 residents in the Vintage 2025 estimates, ahead of Montgomery County, Maryland (1,074,582) and Prince George's County (970,374).

Limited to establishments with paid employees, the Census Bureau's 2023 County Business Patterns counted 159,002 of them across the 23 jurisdictions. Fairfax County led the 2023 County Business Patterns count with 31,931, followed by Montgomery County with 27,677 and the District with 23,801.

If your customers live outside the District, put the Maryland and Virginia jurisdictions you serve on the priority list you give us. The audit maps Map Pack and keyword targets for each one, and the monthly report follows them.

Names that point to two places

Fairfax is the name of a county and of a separate independent city. In the Vintage 2025 estimates the city had 26,772 residents and the county 1,167,873. Five more independent cities in the metro, Alexandria (160,662), Manassas (44,332), Fredericksburg (30,393), Manassas Park (16,560) and Falls Church (15,159), are counted apart from the counties around them in the same Vintage 2025 estimates.

Arlington works the other way. It is a county with no incorporated towns, and the Vintage 2025 estimates list it only as Arlington County, with 243,931 residents. Bethesda and Silver Spring in Montgomery County and Tysons and Reston in Fairfax County are unincorporated, so the Vintage 2025 city estimates carry no figure for any of them.

For Local SEO this is a naming job. A page for Fairfax should say whether it means the city or the county, and a page for Bethesda or Tysons can name its county in the first line. Your business name, address and phone should read the same on every citation, since any variation creates duplicate listings.

The Potomac and the corridors

The Potomac River separates Virginia from the District and Maryland. The Capital Beltway, I-495, crosses it on the American Legion Bridge between Montgomery and Fairfax counties and on the Woodrow Wilson Bridge between Alexandria and Prince George's County.

I-270 runs from the Beltway through Rockville (67,563 in the Vintage 2025 estimates) and Gaithersburg (71,113) to the city of Frederick (92,059). The Dulles Toll Road runs through Tysons and past Reston and Herndon to Dulles Airport, and the Dulles Greenway continues to Leesburg, Loudoun County's largest incorporated town with 49,917 residents in the Vintage 2025 estimates.

Which side of the river you work on shapes the list. A Silver Spring cleaning company that stays in Maryland has no use for a Tysons target, while a Reston firm that serves Loudoun and Fairfax may never need Prince George's County. Rank your priority areas by the corridors and bridges your team uses, and leave out the side of the river you do not serve.

The Local SEO service, plan by plan

  • Audit and targets. Work starts by reviewing your Google Business Profile, existing citations and reviews, then setting Map Pack and keyword targets for the District neighborhoods, Maryland counties and Virginia jurisdictions you name.
  • Citations. Listings are built and corrected until your name, address and phone match in every state you list. Starter places 30 on general directories; Business places 40 and Biz+ 80 or more, selected for industry and local relevance.
  • Google Business Profile and reviews. Profile optimization and review generation support come with every plan, and Business and Biz+ layer on monthly posts, Q&A, services and UTM tagging.
  • Authority. Tiered backlinks are built each month at a volume set by the plan, and Biz+ adds between 2 and 5 monthly guest posts on topic-relevant publishers.
  • Extras. Sold separately: an extra service area page for one community, such as Bethesda or Alexandria; a second Google Business Profile location for a real second address, such as a Virginia office next to one in the District; and review response management.
  • Monthly reporting. The monthly report shows rankings, Map Pack position and traffic, and the next round of citations, content and links follows what is moving.

Plan tiers and extras are listed on our pricing page and the complete scope on our Local SEO page. For Google's own material, see its Business Profile help page on local ranking (opens in new tab).

Washington DC questions

Can one Local SEO campaign plan for the District, Maryland and Virginia?
Yes. The priority list you give us can name District neighborhoods, Maryland counties such as Montgomery and Prince George's, and Virginia jurisdictions such as Arlington, Alexandria and Fairfax County, and the audit sets Map Pack and keyword targets for each one. Your citations carry the same name, address and phone in every state. If you keep a real second office across the river, we can run it as an additional Business Profile location, which is sold as an extra.
My office is in the city of Fairfax. Should my pages say Fairfax County?
Say which one you mean. The city of Fairfax is an independent city, separate from Fairfax County, with 26,772 residents in the Vintage 2025 estimates against 1,167,873 in the county. Keep your address exactly as it appears on your Google Business Profile on every citation, and if you serve county communities such as Vienna, Herndon or Tysons, name them on your priority list.
Should Bethesda, Silver Spring and Tysons get their own pages?
Give pages to the communities where you want more work. All three are unincorporated, so each page should name its county: Montgomery County, Maryland for Bethesda and Silver Spring, and Fairfax County, Virginia for Tysons. Each can be added as an extra service area page, which targets its own searches.
Is BWI part of the Washington metro area?
Not under the federal metro area definitions used in the Census Bureau's Vintage 2025 estimates. BWI Marshall Airport sits in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, a county of 603,380 residents in the Census Bureau's Vintage 2025 estimates, and those estimates place it in the Baltimore-Columbia-Towson metro area. A business that serves BWI can still put Anne Arundel communities on its priority list. Reagan National in Arlington County and Dulles, on the Loudoun and Fairfax county line, are both inside the Washington metro area.
Does Jefferson County, West Virginia belong on my list?
Only if you work there. It is the metro's only West Virginia county, with 63,102 residents in the Vintage 2025 estimates, and its largest incorporated places in the same estimates are Charles Town (9,329) and Ranson (6,853). A Loudoun or Frederick County business that serves it can add those towns to its priority list, with citations carrying the same name, address and phone in both states.
