San Francisco, CA - San Francisco-Oakland
Local SEO in San Francisco, the East Bay and the Peninsula
Local SEO for businesses in San Francisco and across the San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont metro area: citations, backlinks and Google Business Profile work planned around the counties, bridges and cities you serve, from the Mission and the Sunset District to Oakland, Fremont, Walnut Creek, Daly City and San Rafael.
San Francisco counted 826,079 residents on July 1, 2025, ranking fourth in California behind Los Angeles, San Diego and San Jose, according to the U.S. Census Bureau's Vintage 2025 population estimates. The same Vintage 2025 estimates count 4,630,041 people in the San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont metro area, 13th among U.S. metro areas, so about 18 percent of the metro lives in the city. A local SEO plan here starts with the part of those five counties you serve, then points your Google Business Profile, citations, links and pages at that list.
Five counties in three metro divisions
Under the federal metro area definitions used in the Census Bureau's Vintage 2025 estimates, this metro has three metropolitan divisions. In the Vintage 2025 estimates, the Oakland-Fremont-Berkeley division, made up of Alameda and Contra Costa counties, had 2,806,700 residents, about 61 percent of the metro. In the same Vintage 2025 estimates, the San Francisco-San Mateo-Redwood City division had 1,569,647, and the San Rafael division, which is Marin County, had 253,694.
Between July 1, 2024 and July 1, 2025, those estimates show San Francisco County adding 5,134 residents, the largest gain of the five counties, with San Mateo County adding 2,941 and Marin County losing 2,010. Alameda County, the largest of the five at 1,636,630 in the Vintage 2025 estimates, was almost unchanged (up 6). Where your business is based decides which division your priority list starts in, and which bridges it has to cross.
Bridges and corridors that order a Bay Area service area
Every campaign starts from a ranked list of the cities and neighborhoods you want to appear in, and the audit sets Map Pack and keyword targets place by place. Here, a practical way to order the list is by the bridge or freeway out of your base (populations are Census Bureau Vintage 2025 estimates for July 1, 2025):
- Bay Bridge and I-80: Oakland (440,838), Emeryville (13,251) and Berkeley (121,911), with Richmond (114,861) farther north on I-80.
- I-880 down the East Bay shoreline: San Leandro (85,353), Hayward (157,113), Union City (65,282) and Fremont (226,442).
- SR 24, I-680 and I-580: Walnut Creek (70,012), Concord (123,261), San Ramon (86,209), Dublin (71,602) and Pleasanton (74,556), with Livermore (83,457) east on I-580.
- SR 4 east: Pittsburg (77,542), Antioch (118,958) and Brentwood (66,607).
- US 101 and I-280 down the Peninsula: Daly City (101,261), South San Francisco (64,941), San Bruno (42,305), San Mateo (103,337) and Redwood City (82,178).
- Golden Gate Bridge and US 101 north: Sausalito, San Rafael (59,410) and Novato (51,947), with the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge linking Marin to Richmond.
The San Mateo Bridge (SR 92) connects Hayward with Foster City and San Mateo, and the Dumbarton Bridge (SR 84) connects Fremont and Newark with Menlo Park and East Palo Alto. A Hayward company whose crews cross the San Mateo Bridge every day and a Concord company that stays on I-680 would put different cities at the top of their lists, so their Map Pack targets would differ too.
Place names that point to two places
Several Bay Area names cover more than one place, so your listings, page titles and profile copy should say which one you mean (populations are Census Bureau Vintage 2025 estimates for July 1, 2025):
- Richmond is a city of 114,861 in Contra Costa County in the Vintage 2025 estimates, and also the Richmond District in western San Francisco.
- Alameda is a city of 76,876 and a county of 1,636,630.
- San Mateo is a city of 103,337 and a county of 743,568.
- South San Francisco is a separate city of 64,941 in San Mateo County, outside San Francisco's city limits.
San Francisco itself is a consolidated city and county, so the Vintage 2025 estimates give the city and the county the same population. Inside it, neighborhoods such as SoMa, the Mission, Noe Valley, Pacific Heights and the Sunset District are the local names a page can use.
How local SEO work applies across the Bay Area
The Census Bureau's 2023 County Business Patterns counted 133,246 employer establishments across the five counties: 42,318 in Alameda, 33,378 in San Francisco, 25,932 in Contra Costa, 21,569 in San Mateo and 10,049 in Marin. Our local SEO service points the following at the part of that market on your list:
- Audit and targets. We review your Google Business Profile, your existing citations and your reviews, then set Map Pack and keyword targets for every city or San Francisco neighborhood on your list.
- Citations with one exact name, address and phone. 30 listings on general directories on Starter, 40 on tracked industry and local directories on Business, and 80+ in deep industry and local stacks on Biz+. Industry directories are matched to your primary category and the services you sell.
- Backlinks each month. Tiered links pointed at your site and at the landing pages you list as priorities, about 1,000 across the campaign on Starter, about 5,000 on Business and up to about 100,000 dynamic on Biz+, which also adds 2 to 5 guest posts per month on topic-relevant publishers.
- Google Business Profile enhancements. On Business and Biz+, monthly posts, Q&A, services and UTM tagging.
- Extras. Extra service area pages, each covering one neighborhood or city with its own searches; an additional Google Business Profile location for a second real address, such as an Oakland shop alongside a San Francisco one; and review response management, with replies to every review in your voice inside 24 hours.
- Monthly reporting. A report on rankings, Map Pack position and traffic each month.
The pricing page sets out Starter, Business and Biz+ with the scope of each tier. Google's own guidance on local ranking is on its Business Profile help page (opens in new tab).
