Phoenix had 1,665,481 residents on July 1, 2025, in the U.S. Census Bureau's Vintage 2025 population estimates, fifth among U.S. cities after New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Houston. The metro area around it spreads across Maricopa and Pinal counties and dozens of cities and towns. The sections below break the Valley down by county, city and freeway corridor, then turn to plan tiers and to case studies from the Inland Empire and San Diego County.

Greater Phoenix in the Vintage 2025 estimates

The Census Bureau's Vintage 2025 estimates put the Phoenix-Mesa-Chandler metro area at 5,228,938 residents on July 1, 2025, up 59,065 from a year earlier. Maricopa County held 4,689,558 of them in the Vintage 2025 estimates, and Pinal County held 539,380, up from 425,993 in the April 2020 estimates base.

The same Vintage 2025 estimates list 25 incorporated cities and towns with residents in Maricopa County. After Phoenix, the largest in Vintage 2025 are Mesa (513,656), Gilbert (287,285), Chandler (278,748), Glendale (260,572), Scottsdale (243,006) and Peoria (200,881). Gilbert is a town in the Census listing, and its total is larger than Chandler's.

Many Valley residents live outside any city. The Vintage 2025 estimates count 330,319 Maricopa County residents and 260,010 Pinal County residents outside incorporated cities and towns, 48 percent of Pinal County's Vintage 2025 total. Freeway corridors across the Valley

• I-10 west: Tolleson, Avondale, Goodyear and Buckeye, with Loop 303 running north toward Surprise. Buckeye grew from 91,498 residents in the April 2020 estimates base to 125,445 in Vintage 2025.
• Loop 101 (Agua Fria) and Grand Avenue: Glendale, Peoria, El Mirage and Surprise, with Sun City off Grand Avenue.
• I-17 and SR 51 north: north Phoenix villages such as Deer Valley, with Anthem off I-17.
• Loop 101 (Pima) and Loop 202 (Red Mountain): Scottsdale, Tempe and Mesa.
• US 60 east: Mesa, Gilbert and Apache Junction, which Vintage 2025 splits between Pinal County (45,289 residents) and Maricopa County (383).
• Loop 202 (Santan): Chandler and Gilbert, with Queen Creek to the southeast.
• I-10 south: across the Gila River Indian Community into Pinal County, where Vintage 2025 puts Casa Grande at 69,753 residents and the city of Maricopa, reached by SR 347, at 78,362.
