Local SEO for Philadelphia, Its Suburbs and South Jersey

The Census Bureau's Vintage 2025 estimates count 6,329,118 people in the Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington metro, ninth among U.S. metro areas, across 11 counties in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland. Philadelphia itself had 1,574,281 of them, about one in four, which made it the sixth-largest U.S. city in those Vintage 2025 estimates. Its boundary is also the boundary of Philadelphia County, so the county's Vintage 2025 total is the same figure. Four states around one river

The Vintage 2025 metro estimates divide the 11 counties into four metropolitan divisions:

• Philadelphia: Philadelphia County and Delaware County, Pennsylvania, 2,155,218 residents in Vintage 2025.
• Montgomery County-Bucks County-Chester County: the Pennsylvania suburbs to the north and west, 2,082,587 in Vintage 2025.
• Camden: Burlington, Camden and Gloucester counties, New Jersey, 1,329,876 in Vintage 2025.
• Wilmington: New Castle County, Delaware, Cecil County, Maryland, and Salem County, New Jersey, 761,437 in Vintage 2025.

Delaware County is the Pennsylvania county on the city's southwest edge, and New Castle is the metro's county in the state of Delaware, so write the state beside every town on your list. A service area that runs from Northeast Philadelphia to Cherry Hill or Wilmington crosses a state line. The Ben Franklin Bridge leads from Center City to Camden, the Walt Whitman Bridge links South Philadelphia with Gloucester City, the Betsy Ross Bridge reaches Pennsauken and the Tacony-Palmyra Bridge reaches Palmyra, while I-95 runs south to Wilmington. Order your list by the crossings and highways your team uses, and we map Map Pack and keyword targets from it.

Townships, boroughs and mailing names

Outside the city, the Pennsylvania and New Jersey counties are divided into townships, boroughs and small cities, and several well-known place names are unincorporated communities inside them. King of Prussia is in Upper Merion Township, Bala Cynwyd in Lower Merion Township, Drexel Hill in Upper Darby Township and Havertown in Haverford Township, and across the river Marlton is in Evesham Township. In the Vintage 2025 estimates, Upper Darby Township had 85,458 residents, more than Wilmington (73,512) or Camden (71,430), and Cherry Hill Township had 79,965.

In every listing, keep your address exactly as it appears on your mail, since any variation creates duplicate listings. On your website and in your profile description, name both the community and its township, for example King of Prussia in Upper Merion Township.

Names that repeat across the metro

Some municipal names appear more than once in the metro, and a page title without the county can point to the wrong place. The Vintage 2025 estimates list:

• Springfield Township four times: Delaware County (25,039 in Vintage 2025), Montgomery County (21,030), Bucks County (5,246) and Burlington County, New Jersey (3,315).
• Middletown three times: Middletown Township in Bucks County (45,547 in Vintage 2025) and in Delaware County (17,342), and the town of Middletown in New Castle County, Delaware (25,798).
• Upper Providence Township in Montgomery County (24,963 in Vintage 2025) and in Delaware County (10,861).
• Newtown Township in Bucks County (19,806 in Vintage 2025) and in Delaware County (15,438).

Where a name repeats, put the county in the page title and URL, as in Springfield Township, Delaware County.

Where the employer establishments are

The 2023 County Business Patterns counted 29,460 employer establishments in Philadelphia County, about 19 percent of the 153,791 across the metro's 11 counties, while the city holds about a quarter of the metro's residents in the Vintage 2025 estimates. Montgomery County had 26,711 employer establishments in the 2023 County Business Patterns, and Bucks County had 20,043. In the plumbing and HVAC trade, Bucks and Montgomery counties had more establishments than the city: the same 2023 County Business Patterns counted 402 plumbing, heating and air-conditioning contractor establishments with paid employees in Bucks County, 326 in Montgomery County and 225 in Philadelphia County.
