New York, NY - New York Metro
Local SEO in New York, Borough by Borough
New York City's five boroughs are five counties, and the metro around them reaches into New Jersey, Long Island and Westchester. Local SEO in New York starts with naming the boroughs, neighborhoods and cities you serve, then building citations, links and Google Business Profile work around that list.
The U.S. Census Bureau's Vintage 2025 estimates put New York City at 8,584,629 residents on July 1, 2025, the largest population of any U.S. city. The same Vintage 2025 estimates count 20,112,448 people in the New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ metro area, spread over 10 counties in New York and 12 in New Jersey, so about 57 percent of the metro lives outside the city. A New York local SEO campaign begins by deciding which boroughs, neighborhoods and suburbs you serve, then points citations, links and profile work at them.
Five boroughs, five counties
Every borough is also a county, and three of them carry a different county name. In the Census Bureau's Vintage 2025 estimates, Brooklyn (Kings County) had 2,653,963 residents, Queens 2,358,182, Manhattan (New York County) 1,664,862, the Bronx 1,406,332 and Staten Island (Richmond County) 501,290. The Census Bureau's 2023 County Business Patterns, which count establishments with paid employees, found 93,904 establishments in New York County, 62,317 in Kings County, 51,188 in Queens County, 18,674 in Bronx County and 9,684 in Richmond County.
Street addresses add a second naming layer. A Manhattan address reads New York, NY. Brooklyn, Bronx and Staten Island addresses use the borough name, and Queens addresses commonly carry a neighborhood such as Astoria, Flushing or Jamaica as the city. Our intake asks for your business name, address and phone exactly as they should appear on every directory, because any variation creates duplicate listings. Settle the form once, including the floor or suite line in a multi-tenant building, and use it on every listing.
Bridges and tunnels shape the service area
Four of the five boroughs sit on islands: Manhattan and Staten Island on their own, and Brooklyn and Queens on the western end of Long Island, where they share a land border. The Bronx is the only borough on the mainland. Crossings decide how a crew moves between them:
- Manhattan and Brooklyn: the Brooklyn, Manhattan and Williamsburg bridges and the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel.
- Manhattan and Queens: the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge and the Queens-Midtown Tunnel, with the RFK Bridge joining Manhattan, Queens and the Bronx.
- Queens and the Bronx: the Bronx-Whitestone and Throgs Neck bridges.
- Manhattan and the Bronx: the bridges over the Harlem River.
- Brooklyn and Staten Island: the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, Staten Island's only road link to another borough.
At intake you rank the neighborhoods and towns you want to show up in, most important first, and we map Map Pack targets from that ranking. A contractor based in Long Island City might start with Astoria, Sunnyside and Midtown, while one in Bay Ridge might start with Sunset Park, Dyker Heights and Staten Island.
New Jersey, Long Island and Westchester
In the Vintage 2025 estimates, Newark had 323,808 residents and Jersey City 302,013, the two New Jersey cities in the metro's name, in Essex County (896,379) and Hudson County (735,033). The Holland and Lincoln tunnels and the George Washington Bridge cross the Hudson River to Manhattan, and the Goethals Bridge, Bayonne Bridge and Outerbridge Crossing tie Staten Island to New Jersey. In the same Vintage 2025 estimates, Nassau County (1,398,939) and Suffolk County (1,546,090), east of Queens, form the metro's Nassau County-Suffolk County metropolitan division, and Westchester County (1,015,743), north of the Bronx, includes Yonkers (212,603) and White Plains (62,871).
A business working on both sides of the Hudson needs the same name, address and phone on New York and New Jersey directories. A second real address, such as a Jersey City office next to a Manhattan one, is handled as an additional Google Business Profile location, one of our Local SEO extras.
What the work covers in New York
Each deliverable of our Local SEO service gets aimed at the boroughs and towns on your ranked list:
- The audit. We review your Google Business Profile, the citations already published about you and your reviews, then turn the ranked list into Map Pack and keyword targets, so a Flushing restaurant and a Tribeca law office end up with different target sets.
- Citation building and cleanup. Starter covers 30 listings on general directories, Business 40 on tracked industry and local directories, and Biz+ 80 or more in deep industry and local stacks, each carrying the same name, address and phone. The industry directories follow from your primary category: a Manhattan locksmith sits in a category where the 2023 County Business Patterns placed 63 of the city's 178 locksmith establishments with paid employees in New York County.
- Links. Tiered backlinks built every month, roughly 1,000 over a Starter campaign, roughly 5,000 on Business and up to roughly 100k dynamic on Biz+, sent to the pages you pick, a Williamsburg page or a Jersey City page for instance.
- The profile. Optimization and help with review generation come with all three plans. Business and Biz+ add a monthly round of posts, Q&A, services and UTM tags, and Biz+ also places 2 to 5 guest posts a month with topic-relevant publishers.
- Add-ons. An extra service area page per borough or neighborhood, a second profile location for a second real address, and review response management, which replies to each review within a day.
- The monthly report. Rankings, Map Pack position and traffic, followed by changes to citations, content and links where the numbers move.
Each plan's inclusions and price are on our pricing page, and Google keeps its own local ranking guidance (opens in new tab).
