Local SEO in Detroit for Metro Detroit Businesses

Detroit had 649,095 residents on July 1, 2025, in the U.S. Census Bureau's Vintage 2025 population estimates, up from 644,035 a year earlier. The Detroit-Warren-Dearborn metro area counted 4,390,913 people in the same Vintage 2025 estimates, so fewer than one in six of the metro's residents live in the city. The rest are spread across Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties and three smaller ones (Lapeer, Livingston and St. Clair).

That spread shapes local SEO here. A Google Business Profile has one address. Google explains how local results are ranked on its Business Profile help page (opens in new tab). A Metro Detroit plan starts with the towns you serve, in priority order, and aims the profile, citations and reviews at that list, with a town page where you have the work to fill one.

Detroit: downtown and Midtown

The Census Bureau's 2023 County Business Patterns, at the ZIP code level, counted 1,109 employer establishments in downtown's 48226, including 118 offices of lawyers and 71 full-service restaurants. The same 2023 data show 481 establishments in 48201, which takes in Midtown, and 97 of them were in health care and social assistance. In that 2023 count, a downtown law firm shares its ZIP code with more than a hundred other law offices, so the work goes into what can set it apart: a precise primary category, a page for each practice area, and reviews and citations that show the firm's name the same way everywhere.

If customers know you by neighborhood, such as Corktown, New Center or Southwest Detroit, use those names where they are true: in the profile description, and in image captions and alt text on your website.

Oakland County

Oakland County had 1,288,337 residents in the 2025 estimates, roughly twice the population of Detroit, and 39,792 employer establishments in the 2023 County Business Patterns, more than Wayne County's 33,699. The 2023 counts for Oakland include 1,244 offices of lawyers and 777 offices of dentists, against 494 and 584 in Wayne County. Its largest cities in the 2025 estimates were Troy (88,733), Farmington Hills (83,291), Rochester Hills (77,539) and Southfield (76,111).

The Bloomfield names need care. In the 2025 estimates the city of Bloomfield Hills had 4,390 residents, Bloomfield Township 43,904 and West Bloomfield Township 66,049, and a page that says only Bloomfield could mean any of them. Name each one you serve.

Macomb County

Macomb County had 886,221 residents in the 2025 estimates. It holds the two largest cities in the metro after Detroit, Warren (137,138) and Sterling Heights (133,931), followed in the Vintage 2025 estimates by Clinton Township (101,374), Macomb Township (95,099) and Shelby Township (80,415). St. Clair Shores, on the lakeshore, had 57,872 in the Vintage 2025 estimates.

The 2023 County Business Patterns counted 19,593 employer establishments in Macomb. Of those, 1,400 were specialty trade contractors in 2023, more than Wayne County's 1,391, although Macomb had about half of Wayne's population in the 2025 estimates. The same 2023 counts include 382 residential remodelers and 261 plumbing, heating and air-conditioning contractors in Macomb. The name needs care here too: Macomb Township is one community inside Macomb County, so a page for Macomb should say which one it means.

Wayne County beyond the city

Wayne County had 1,769,038 residents in the 2025 estimates, about 1.12 million of them outside Detroit. After Detroit, its largest communities in the Vintage 2025 estimates were Dearborn (105,611), Canton Township (99,714), Livonia (92,603) and Westland (82,333). Dearborn and Dearborn Heights (60,664 in the Vintage 2025 estimates) are separate cities. Northville and Plymouth each have a city and a separate township: in the 2025 estimates Northville Township had 31,399 residents to the city's 6,013, and Plymouth Township 27,130 to the city's 9,164. Pages and profile copy should name the one you serve.

The Grosse Pointes are five separate cities with 44,645 residents combined in the 2025 estimates: Grosse Pointe, Grosse Pointe Farms, Grosse Pointe Park, Grosse Pointe Woods and Grosse Pointe Shores. One page for the Grosse Pointes that names the ones where you have done jobs, with work from each, covers the area without five near-identical pages.

Ann Arbor

Ann Arbor had 122,233 residents in the 2025 estimates. It is in Washtenaw County (370,214 in 2025), which federal metro area definitions, used in Census Bureau estimates, treat as the Ann Arbor metro area, apart from Detroit-Warren-Dearborn. A business that works both Ann Arbor and western Wayne County can plan Ann Arbor as a separate market with its own page and reviews.
