Charlotte, NC - Charlotte Metro

Local SEO in Charlotte, from Lake Norman to Rock Hill

Charlotte anchors a metro area that runs from Lake Norman and Salisbury south across the state line to Rock Hill and Chester. Local SEO here means citations, backlinks and Google Business Profile work aimed at the towns you name, with add-on service area pages for the towns you want targeted on their own.

The Charlotte-Concord-Gastonia metro area spans 11 counties on both sides of the North Carolina and South Carolina line, and the Census Bureau's Vintage 2025 metro estimates count 2,938,830 residents there on July 1, 2025, 21st among U.S. metro areas. Charlotte holds about a third of them: 964,784 residents in the Vintage 2025 city and town estimates, 14th among U.S. cities. In the same Vintage 2025 metro estimates, the area added 54,122 residents between July 1, 2024 and July 1, 2025, the fifth-largest numeric gain of any U.S. metro area.

A Charlotte campaign starts from the towns and neighborhoods you serve, ranked, and the sections below show how the metro's counties, towns and corridors shape that list.

Eight North Carolina counties and three in South Carolina

The Vintage 2025 metro estimates list 11 counties in the metro area. In North Carolina they are Mecklenburg (1,233,383 residents), Union (267,674), Cabarrus (249,725), Gaston (246,558), Iredell (211,798), Rowan (155,096), Lincoln (98,654) and Anson (21,758), per the Vintage 2025 estimates. In South Carolina they are York (306,887), Lancaster (114,296) and Chester (33,001), 454,184 residents together in the Vintage 2025 estimates, a little more than one in seven people in the metro.

For a business that works on both sides, the state line changes the county and state named on each page, and for contractors the license shown. Your business name, address and phone stay identical on every listing in both states, because any variation creates duplicate listings.

Split towns and unincorporated communities

Several towns near Charlotte sit in two counties. In the Vintage 2025 estimates, Kannapolis has 50,152 residents in Cabarrus County and 11,556 in Rowan County, Stallings has 17,233 in Union County and 527 in Mecklenburg County, and Davidson has 16,247 in Mecklenburg County and 415 in Iredell County. If your pages name a county for one of these towns, name both.

The Vintage 2025 estimates also place 158,265 of York County's residents outside any incorporated place, more than twice the population of Rock Hill. Communities such as Indian Land in Lancaster County and Lake Wylie in York County have no rows in those Vintage 2025 city and town estimates, so put them on your list and in your page copy by name.

Corridors that order a Charlotte service area

Five road corridors group the metro's larger towns into natural blocks for a ranked list. Every population below is a Census Bureau Vintage 2025 estimate for July 1, 2025.

  • I-77 north to Lake Norman (Vintage 2025): Huntersville (68,535), Cornelius (35,094), Davidson (16,662) and Mooresville (55,842).
  • I-85 and NC 49 northeast (Vintage 2025): Concord (114,598) and Kannapolis (61,708) along I-85, and Harrisburg (20,742) on NC 49.
  • I-85 west across the Catawba River (Vintage 2025): Belmont (16,415), Mount Holly (19,033) and Gastonia (87,067) in Gaston County.
  • US 74 east (Vintage 2025): Matthews (32,769) in Mecklenburg County, then Indian Trail (44,303) and Monroe (42,644), the Union County seat.
  • I-77 and US 521 south (Vintage 2025): Pineville (11,851) near the state line, then Fort Mill (38,673), Tega Cay (14,457) and Rock Hill (75,911) in York County, South Carolina, with Indian Land along US 521 in Lancaster County.

I-485 rings Charlotte and links all five. A roofer in Mooresville would open its list with the Lake Norman towns; a cleaning company in Ballantyne would open with south Charlotte, Pineville, Fort Mill and Indian Land, and each list produces its own target map.

What each plan includes is on our pricing page. Google's Business Profile help page on local ranking (opens in new tab) is linked for reference.

Charlotte questions

Are Statesville, Salisbury and Hickory part of the Charlotte metro?
Statesville and Salisbury are; Hickory sits outside it. In the Census Bureau's Vintage 2025 estimates, Statesville, the Iredell County seat, had 32,181 residents and Salisbury, the Rowan County seat, had 36,879, and both counties belong to the Charlotte-Concord-Gastonia metro area. Hickory is in Catawba County, which the Vintage 2025 estimates place in the Hickory-Lenoir-Morganton metro area, with 376,890 residents. If you serve Hickory or Newton, list them as targets of their own.
My business is in Mint Hill. Should my listings say Charlotte?
Your listings should show the town in your address exactly as it appears on your Google Business Profile, spelled the same on every directory. Mint Hill is an incorporated town in Mecklenburg County, with 29,476 residents in the Census Bureau's Vintage 2025 estimates. If you also serve Charlotte, put it on your list as a separate target.
Can one Google Business Profile list service areas in both North and South Carolina?
Yes. A profile carries one address, and a business that travels to its customers can list service areas on both sides of the state line, such as Pineville, Fort Mill and Rock Hill. A second staffed location, such as an office in Rock Hill, needs a profile of its own, which we manage through the additional Google Business Profile location extra.
Should a Lake Norman business use 'Lake Norman' or the town names?
Both have a place. Lake Norman is a lake, and the towns along it sit in different counties: Cornelius and Huntersville in Mecklenburg County, Davidson in Mecklenburg and Iredell counties, Mooresville in Iredell County, and the unincorporated community of Denver, North Carolina, in Lincoln County on the west side. Put each town you serve on your list by name, and use Lake Norman in headings and copy where it describes the area you cover.
