Local SEO in Boston for Businesses Across Greater Boston

Greater Boston crosses a state line and splits into many separately governed cities and towns, so a campaign here starts with deciding which of those places you serve. Below are the official figures we plan around, what Local SEO includes here, and two case studies from outside Massachusetts.

Greater Boston in the Census Bureau's 2025 estimates

According to the Census Bureau's Vintage 2025 estimates, the Boston-Cambridge-Newton, MA-NH metropolitan area had 5,034,221 residents on July 1, 2025, making it the 11th-largest metropolitan statistical area in the country. In the Vintage 2025 metro file, it covers seven counties: Essex, Middlesex, Norfolk, Plymouth and Suffolk in Massachusetts, and Rockingham and Strafford in New Hampshire. The Vintage 2025 metro file groups them into three metropolitan divisions: Boston (Norfolk, Plymouth and Suffolk, 2,078,469 residents), Cambridge-Newton-Framingham (Essex and Middlesex, 2,496,632) and Rockingham County-Strafford County (459,120).

In the same Vintage 2025 estimates, the city of Boston had 672,973 residents and Suffolk County had 791,891, a county total that also covers Chelsea, Revere and Winthrop. For a campaign, the unit that matters is the place name: our audit maps Map Pack and keyword targets from the priority list you give us, so Revere or Winthrop belongs on that list by name if you work there.

The cities and towns on your list

The Census Bureau's Vintage 2025 subcounty estimates divide the metro's population among 197 cities and towns, 147 in the five Massachusetts counties and 50 in the two New Hampshire counties. After Boston, the largest in those 2025 estimates were Cambridge (122,588), Lowell (119,971), Brockton (106,134), Lynn (104,236), Quincy (103,173), Newton (90,741), Lawrence (89,320) and Somerville (84,211).

Boston's own neighborhoods add a second layer. Dorchester, Roxbury, Charlestown, Brighton, West Roxbury and Hyde Park were once separate municipalities that Boston later annexed, and the Census Bureau's estimates now count them inside the city total. Brookline, a town of 63,414 in the Vintage 2025 estimates, never joined Boston; it borders Newton to the west and Boston neighborhoods on its other sides. On your priority list, a Boston neighborhood and a neighboring town are separate entries, and any of them can have its own extra service area page if you want more work there.

The New Hampshire side

Rockingham County, New Hampshire had 324,077 residents and Strafford County 135,043 in the Census Bureau's Vintage 2025 estimates, with Dover (34,623), Derry (33,990) and Rochester (33,716) the three largest communities. Manchester and Nashua are in Hillsborough County, which the Census Bureau's Vintage 2025 metro file lists in the separate Manchester-Nashua, NH metro area.

Seven place names in the Vintage 2025 subcounty estimates appear on both sides of the state line inside this metro: Dover, Kingston, Middleton, Milton, Newton, Rochester and Salem. In those 2025 estimates, Salem, Massachusetts had 45,381 residents and Salem, New Hampshire 31,868, so citations, page titles and service area lists for either one should carry the state. A company working both sides of the border should show one identical name, address and phone in Massachusetts and New Hampshire directories, and a real second office across the line fits the additional Google Business Profile location extra.

Corridors across the metro

I-93 runs north through Somerville, Medford and Stoneham toward Salem, New Hampshire, and south as the Southeast Expressway through Dorchester and Quincy to Braintree. The Massachusetts Turnpike carries I-90 west through Allston, Newton and Framingham. Route 128 arcs through the inner suburbs from Needham and Waltham to Burlington and Peabody, and I-495 makes a wider arc through Marlborough, Lowell, Lawrence and Haverhill. Route 3 runs down the South Shore to Plymouth, and US 1 crosses the Tobin Bridge into Chelsea and Revere.

• Audit. Your Google Business Profile, citations and review profile are audited first. Map Pack and keyword targets then come from your ranked list, so a Somerville electrician and a Plymouth landscaper start from different maps.
• Citations. Starter builds 30 listings in general directories, Business 40 in industry and local directories, and Biz+ 80 or more in deep industry and local stacks, all carrying one name, address and phone. In the Census Bureau's 2023 County Business Patterns, a Middlesex County plumber's category held 770 plumbing, heating and air-conditioning contractor establishments with paid employees in that county alone; Starter lists that plumber in general directories, and Business and Biz+ move to industry and local directories matched to the trade.
• Profile and reviews. Starter, Business and Biz+ all cover profile optimization and review generation support. Monthly posts, Q&A entries, service listings and UTM tagging are Business and Biz+ features.
• Links. Backlinks are built monthly to grow domain authority, with campaign volume of about 1,000 on Starter, 5,000 on Business and up to 100k dynamic on Biz+, where topic-relevant publishers also carry 2 to 5 guest posts a month.
• Paid extras. An extra service area page covers one neighborhood or town, such as East Boston or Malden; a second Google Business Profile location covers a second address; review response management answers each review in your voice.
• Reporting. Monthly figures cover Map Pack position, rankings and traffic, and whatever those figures show moving decides where citations, content and links go next.
