Atlanta, GA - Metro Atlanta
Local SEO in Atlanta, Inside and Outside the Perimeter
The Census Bureau's Vintage 2025 estimates put 6,482,182 people in the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell metro area, spread over 29 counties. Local SEO in Atlanta starts with the counties, cities and neighborhoods you serve on each side of I-285, then builds your citations and Google Business Profile around that list, with extra service area pages where you want them.
Metro Atlanta runs from intown neighborhoods inside I-285 to suburban cities and unincorporated county land far outside it. Below are the metro's Census figures, how county lines and the Perimeter shape the list of areas you give us, and what the service includes.
Metro Atlanta in Census numbers
The U.S. Census Bureau's Vintage 2025 estimates put the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell metro area at 6,482,182 residents on July 1, 2025, the sixth-largest total of any U.S. metro area. In the Vintage 2025 estimates, the metro splits into two metropolitan divisions: Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell, with 24 counties and 5,044,702 residents, and Marietta, with Bartow, Cherokee, Cobb, Haralson and Paulding counties and 1,437,480 residents.
Four counties hold most of those residents. In the Vintage 2025 estimates, Fulton County had 1,098,791 residents, Gwinnett County 1,018,099, Cobb County 793,345 and DeKalb County 774,394, together 57 percent of the metro. Atlanta itself, at 529,110 residents in the Vintage 2025 estimates, is the most populous city in Georgia, and its city limits reach from Fulton County into DeKalb.
Employer counts follow the same order. Across the metro's 29 counties, the Census Bureau's 2023 County Business Patterns found 163,103 establishments with paid employees, led by Fulton County (40,949), Gwinnett (27,653), Cobb (22,148) and DeKalb (18,258). Your address puts your business in one of those counties, so begin your service area list there and add the other counties you work in. Our audit draws its Map Pack and keyword targets from that list.
Most of Gwinnett, Cobb and DeKalb sits outside city limits
In the Vintage 2025 estimates, 714,919 Gwinnett County residents lived outside any city, 70 percent of the county. The Vintage 2025 figures for residents outside any city were 503,336 in Cobb County and 419,159 in DeKalb County. Fulton County is the reverse: the Vintage 2025 estimates leave 742 of its residents outside the 15 cities wholly or partly inside it, which include South Fulton (112,820), Sandy Springs (105,013), Roswell (91,505), Johns Creek (80,401) and Alpharetta (66,921).
That changes how you name the places you serve. East Cobb and Vinings, for example, are unincorporated communities in Cobb County with no city government of their own. Put the communities, neighborhoods and corridors you work in on your priority list next to the city names, so the places your customers live get targets of their own.
Inside and outside the Perimeter
I-285, known as the Perimeter, loops around the core of the metro. Inside it (ITP) sit intown neighborhoods such as Midtown, Old Fourth Ward, Inman Park, Grant Park, West End and Buckhead, plus the city of Decatur. Outside it (OTP), the freeways run out to the suburbs: GA 400 north through Sandy Springs to Roswell, Alpharetta and Cumming; I-75 and I-575 northwest to Marietta, Kennesaw and Woodstock; I-85 northeast toward Norcross, Duluth and Suwanee; and I-20 east to Stonecrest and Conyers.
A priority list for a business based in Decatur should read differently from one for a business based in Kennesaw, even when both say they serve Atlanta. Build yours from the freeways your crews drive. Rankings and Map Pack position for those areas then show up in each monthly report, along with your site traffic.
What Local SEO covers for an Atlanta business
- Audit and targets. The first step is an audit covering your Google Business Profile, existing citations and reviews. Map Pack and keyword targets follow, set for the ITP neighborhoods, OTP cities and unincorporated communities you listed.
- Citations by plan. Every listing we build or clean carries one name, address and phone. Plan size sets the count and the kind of directory: 30 general directories on Starter, 40 industry and local directories on Business, or 80+ listings in deep industry and local stacks on Biz+.
- Google Business Profile and reviews. Profile optimization and help with review generation come with all three plans. On Business and Biz+, the profile also gets posts, Q&A, services and UTM tagging every month.
- Authority. Backlinks go out every month, and the campaign total depends on the tier: near 1,000 for Starter, near 5,000 for Business, and a dynamic program of up to about 100k for Biz+. Biz+ also places 2 to 5 guest posts each month with publishers relevant to your topic.
- Extras. Three Local SEO extras are sold separately: an extra service area page aimed at one neighborhood or city, say Grant Park or Lawrenceville; an additional Google Business Profile location for a real second address; and review response management.
- Monthly reporting. You get rankings, Map Pack position and traffic in a report every month, and the citation, content and link work shifts toward whatever is moving.

Proof from our San Diego County case studies
We have no clients in metro Atlanta. The work we point to is in San Diego County, California.
The NG Painting case study covers a San Diego County painting company with close to three decades of work and no online presence when the project started. Its build combined a WordPress site, local SEO for 12 service areas and Google Ads. The reported results are Top 5 local rankings for "painting company San Diego" plus 12 city-level keywords, and quote requests up 200% through the website and Google Ads. Our Local SEO plans include neither a website build nor Google Ads management.
Per its case study, Palm Urgent Care & Mental Health operates four walk-in clinics in San Diego County, two of them in El Cajon and the others in National City and San Ysidro. Every clinic received its own location page carrying the full name, address and phone, hours, services and a link to book online. The case study reports more than 1,000 clicks from Google web search on 99,100 impressions between late June and late September 2026.
Getting started from Atlanta
Our team works from El Cajon, California. A campaign needs six things from you at the start: a manager role on your Google Business Profile; the one name, address and phone you want on every listing; your website plus its most important landing pages; a ranked list of service areas (it might open with Buckhead, East Cobb or Duluth); your primary business category and the services you sell; and Google Analytics and Search Console read access so the monthly report can show traffic.
Start by sending your address, services and ranked areas through our contact page.
